But in previous generations, especially the bourgeois Victorian period, the family had a strong cohesive force that had a great influence on people&#8217;s lives. Some believe it still does today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This ballet is a depiction of four people&#8217;s family conflicts.The father is an officer concerned with keeping up appearances, as he makes his livelihood through war. He drinks to allay his fears. The mother is brought up in the ideal of purity, in other words that sex is dirty and dangerous. The daughter feels trapped and longs for love. Her boyfriend is the son of a poor. A conflict arises between these four disparate people, who are in actuality complete strangers to one another, despite their strong love.
