{"id":17962,"date":"2019-01-22T14:49:59","date_gmt":"2019-01-22T14:49:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.cullberg.com\/archived_performance\/eurydike-ar-dod\/"},"modified":"2026-06-09T08:07:41","modified_gmt":"2026-06-09T08:07:41","slug":"eurydike-ar-dod","status":"publish","type":"archived_performance","link":"https:\/\/cms.cullberg.com\/en\/archived_performance\/eurydike-ar-dod\/","title":{"rendered":"Eurydike \u00e4r d\u00f6d (Eurydike&#8217;s death)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Palle Nielsen&#8217;s graphic suite of Orfeus and the Eurydic motif inspired Birgit Cullberg to a modern version on this theme where the underground Hades is a petrified and warlike world. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The ballet expresses the individual&#8217;s powerlessness in front of a society in which violence rests and an attempt to break out uncontrollably.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Eurydike&#8217;s death<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> premiered in January 1968 and became an important political work on the individual&#8217;s struggle against power and oppression in a dictatorship, inspired by the film The <\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Battle of Algiers<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , led by Gillo Pontecorvo and with music by Ennio Morricone.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Eurydike&#8217;s death<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> was recorded for SVT 1970 with the Cullberg Ballet dancer. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">At SVT Open archive there is a documentary <\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">A choreographer&#8217;s work<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> on Birgit&#8217;s work with the set. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The work was danced at the Royal Opera in Stockholm in 1984 to celebrate Birgit&#8217;s 75th birthday. <\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Eurydike&#8217;s death was<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> recreated by Ana Laguna and Mats Ek 2017 for the 50th anniversary of the Cullberg Ballet. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The original costume was made by Eva Ek-Schaeffer and was recreated by Mylla Ek for the 50th anniversary. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Martin S\u00e4fstr\u00f6m was the lighting designer for the new set.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">With 14 dancers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Palle Nielsen&#8217;s graphic suite of Orfeus and the Eurydic motif inspired Birgit Cullberg to a modern version on this theme where the underground Hades is a petrified and warlike world.
