Kalfaktorn / The Officer’s Servant is Mats Ek’s first work for The Cullberg Ballet and had its premiere in Falun in 1976. The piece, based on Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck, depicts how a poor soldier seeks revenge after his wife betrays him with a young junior officer. Enraged, humiliated and subjugated, Woyzeck stabs his wife to death. While his act may be seen as a form of social or class protest, it ultimately harms the person most dear to him and not the object of his rage, the officer.
