Video projections and editing have played a key role in the development of Alexander Ekman’s choreographic language, and have often featured in his stage works as a content, visual, and temporal device. Marking his first long form choreography for film, 40M Under was shot in the summer of 2009 in the Royal Technical University’s closed nuclear reactor hall, and featured dancers from the Cullberg Ballet.
“What makes film so interesting for me is the opportunity to play with perspective, tempo and imagery in a way that the stage does not afford. There is a closeness in film that allows details to be more clearly seen and heightened. The Cullberg dancers strong personalities become even clearer on film than on stage,” says Alexander Ekman.
