Per Jonssons’ Schakt (Shaft) (1983) was his graduation production for the University of Dance’s Choreographic Studies program and went on to became the work that launched his career. Dancers from the Royal Swedish Ballet danced the work. Schakt (Shaft) is defined by a strict, formal musical buildup stemming from the clear structure of the score. There seems an invisible network running through the piece, with dance, music and scenography forming a closed circuit that results in a singular esthetic expression. SVT recorded the work in 1987 with dancers from both the Royal Swedish Ballet and the Cullberg Ballet.
