Slow, Heavy and Blue

Slow, Heavy and Blue was originally created in February 1980 for the Ballet de l´Opera de Paris and was part of GRTOP’s repertoire from November 1981 (Paris Opera’s young experimental group led by Carolyn Carlson for a number of years). The piece was incorporated into the Cullberg Ballet’s repertoire in 1995. Carolyn Carlson’s choreographic work is poetic and lyrical with an unmistakably magical quality. Slow, Heavy and Blue is a meditative piece for nine dancers and, according to Carolyn Carlson, is just as slow, heavy and ‘blue’ as the following lines reveal:

The sun died SLOW
the earth went HEAVY
and the rain fell BLUE

The music was specially composed by French musician René Aubry. Peter Vos is created the lighting design.
